Get Hooked on Reading!
The more children read, the stronger their reading becomes. Their enjoyment increases and they become hooked on reading. As children read more, they become better, smarter students. Encourage your child to read every day from books that are at their reading level.
How to Choose a "Just Right Book"
Brainwork - Before looking for a book, think about
* a topic I'm interested in
* a familiar author
* a series I'd like to read, or
* I'd like to try something new!
Preview - Using parts of the book help me learn more about it
* read the title and summary (on back or inside jacket)
* look at the cover and illustrations
* read the table of contents
Try It - Check to see if it is easy, just right, or challenging
* read at least a page aloud (quietly)
* close the book and retell the part you read
Decide - Is this book "just right"?
* did I read it at a conversational speed?
* Did it sound smooth?
* Were there only a few (0-5) hard words?
* Did I understand the story?If you answered yes to all of these questions then you have chosen a . . . Just Right Book!
Book Wizard
Parents, this is a tool to help you find the guided reading level for a book. While the tips above help students find a book that is just right, sometimes it's helpful to know the level according to the system we use at Broad Brook School. Click on Book Wizard. In the upper right hand corner under Your Reading Level System, choose Guided Reading and click Set. Then on the left, under quick Search, type in the title of the book. If it has been evaluated according to our system, the letter representing the level will appear. Unfortunately not all books have a guided reading level.
